Ex-Jehovah's Witness sues
church
CALGARY, AB, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- A Canadian man whose daughter died
of leukemia after a battle over blood transfusions is suing the
Jehovah's Witnesses.
Lawrence Hughes of Calgary left the Witnesses and broke with his
wife when his daughter Bethany became sick. He won a court order
that resulted in his daughter becoming a temporary ward of the court
during treatment with chemotherapy and transfusions.
His suit names his wife, the Witnesses, the Watchtower Society of
Canada and doctors at the Cross Cancer Institute. He claims that his
wife and the church gave his daughter misleading information and
that the institute provided an alternate treatment without proper
consent.
Bethany was moved to the Cross Institute after doctors at the
Alberta Children's Hospital said she had become too frail to undergo
any more chemotherapy. She died not long after her 17th
birthday.
